What is the Rotary Youth Exchange Program?
The Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Program is one of the best student exchange programs available for Australian high schoolers.
Designed to promote global understanding through cultural immersion, RYE sends students aged 15–18 overseas to live with a host family, attend a local school, and experience life in a country of their choice.
If you’re looking for the best exchange program for Australian teens, RYE is — in my opinion — the clear winner.

The Experience

A Rotary Youth Exchange year abroad is unlike anything else. You’ll make lifelong friends from all around the world, learn a new language, and experience everyday life as a student in a country you choose — all while living with a host family who treats you like one of their own.
Yes, this means you’ll be going to high school. But it’s so much more than that.
Seeing what life is like for people your age in a completely different country, culture, and school is something no classroom can teach you.
If you’re already thinking about life after high school, a RYE can also be the perfect stepping stone. Check out Why You Should Travel Before You Start University.

International Connections

Experiencing the country and culture is just the beginning. One of the biggest benefits of a RYE, is you get to meet and befriend people from all around the world.
Thanks to RYE, my closest friends are from the other side of the world — and yours could be too.
And I’m not exaggerating — because of RYE, I now have friends on every inhabited continent.
Seeing the World
The friends are just the beginning — you also get to travel and see the world.
Depending on which country you choose for your high school exchange year, you’ll have the chance to travel with Rotary, with your host families, and sometimes even independently with friends. During my exchange in Switzerland, I visited four different countries — and that was during the COVID pandemic.
No matter which country you choose, as long as you stay committed to Rotary’s morals and values, you’ll almost certainly have an amazing time.

How to Apply for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program in Australia
First, you need to get a quick understanding of what Rotary is.
Rotary is a global network of volunteers and leaders (called Rotarians) dedicated to “creating lasting and positive changes throughout communities all around the world”.
Globally there are over 1.2 million Rotarians, in more than 45,000 clubs in almost every country in the world. For over 110 years, Rotarians have committed to helping communities all around the world help fight many different causes like:
- Promoting peace
- Fighting disease
- Providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene
- Saving mothers and children
- Supporting education
- Growing local communities
- Protecting the environment
You can learn more about their mission and programs on the official Rotary International website.
Finding Your District
NOW that you have a basic understanding of Rotary, you now need to find your local Rotary district.
To go on a RYE, you have to apply through your Rotary District.
In order to find your Rotary district, simply google “Rotary District (enter your city/town)“.
If you are still having some trouble, you can go the RYE Australia home page and look for your district on there.
Signing Up
*Note: While every district’s Rotary Youth Exchange program follows a similar structure, each one has its own specific application process. Make sure you follow the guidelines for your district.
The next step is to submit an application of interest. The best time to do this is almost exactly a year before the start of your exchange year.
As the exchange year follows your school year, the best time to apply is in December/January. (For example: if you apply in December 2026/January 2027, your departure date will be January 2028)
How to Submit an Application of Interest
To submit an application of interest, you first need to go to your districts own RYE Program page. Simply enter “Rotary District (your district number) Youth Exchange Program”. There you can easily find the “apply now” and “enquire now” buttons. If you cannot find your Rotary district, you can simply go fill out an “expression of interest” from the RYE Australia page.
What Happens Next?
*Note: This process is from personal experience. As I am from Brisbane, this is the process from my district. Although the process is similar, it may have changed and may differ from your Rotary District’s
Once you submit your ‘expression of interest’ for your exchange, the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Program from your district gives you the official application form to submit, and along with that, the dates for your first interviews.
The Interview Process
In your first interviews, Rotarians will ask about your interests, your school results, and a bit about your life so they can get to know you. There is a filtering process. You cannot just rock up and expect to go on an exchange.
As a teenager, moving from your familiar home environment to living with a host family in another country is a big adjustment, so you have to prove to the Rotarians interviewing you that you are capable of going on an exchange.
What Rotarians value most is your attitude – how you approach meeting new people, your openness to new challenges, and your ability to handle situations outside your comfort zone.
After the Interviews
After the initial interviews, the Rotarians will get together and decide:
- A: Whether you will suit a youth exchange
- B: Which country will suit you best
They will always take your country preferences into consideration, however they may not always pick your first choice. They will choose a country that will suit you and your personality best.
After their decision, you will then undergo “training”.
Training
Every district and RYE program handles the next process differently.
In Brisbane, we undergo training.
Training includes:
- Learning about cultural awareness and adaptation
- Understanding cultural differences, traditions and social norms
- Preparing for culture and reverse culture shocks
- Learning about your ambassadorial roles
- Understanding your responsibility as a representative of your country and Rotary
- Learning Rotary values, ethics and program guidelines
- How to integrate into your host family and school preparation
- Expectations for living with host families
- School integration and academic requirements
Finally: ✈️
More Than a Year Abroad

Once your final training is finished, you are finally ready to take off. On your departure date, you will meet other RYE students from yours and surrounding districts, and all fly over to your destinations together.
A Rotary Youth Exchange is more than just a year abroad. It’s an opportunity to see the world, meet incredible people, and grow in ways you never expected.
Every stage of the process is designed to shape you into a confident, globally minded individual.
The exchange challenges you to step outside your comfort zone — and in doing so, it opens doors to lifelong friendships, global connections, and an unforgettable experience.
